This French biopic depicts the life of Napoléon Bonaparte, beginning with his arrival at a military academy, through his rise to power as Emperor of France, and to his exile to and death on the island of St. Helena. No story of Napoleon would be complete without the story of his romance with Josephine and his subsequent secret liaisons. (This French film is a contemporary English production.)

Leo Tolstoy’s’ masterpiece comes to life in this Oscar-nominated epic staring Audrey Hepburn as Natasha, Henry Fonda as Pierre, and Mel Ferrer as Prince Andrei. This compelling film includes international conflicts, spectacular adventure, griping intrigue, and the tragic romance set against the sweeping backdrop of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia.

Special Exhibition:

The Style that Ruled the Empires: Russia, Napoleon and 1812
Russia’s triumph over the French army in the Patriotic War of 1812, which dealt an arresting blow to Napoleon and his pursuit of European conquest, ignited a collective Russian pride and production of decorative arts celebrating the occasion that persist today. The Style that Ruled the Empires: Russia, Napoleon, and 1812 brings together paintings, porcelain, glassware, metalware, attire, and Napoleonic armor and militaria to commemorate the bicentennial of this dramatic event. Exquisite Russian and French decorative art objects from Hillwood’s renowned collection, as well as items on loan, will also explore how the Empire style, fashionable across Europe in the 19th century, was adopted by Russian artisans, signaling the continued enchantment with French art and culture.

This program is made possible with the support of the Dina Merrill Film Program at Hillwood, and is presented in partnership with Alliance Française de Washington and the Art Soiree.
